Artist's Statement

The following is a statement about the evolution of my work to the present. [click here for current statement and resume]

"A summary of my artistic practice:

I look out and in to paint the space in between. Beauty, pain, and time are there."

I graduated Massachusetts College of Art in December of 1993. Art from college through my twenties reflects the angst of adolescence and coming of age. The abstract, reconfigured landscapes or "mindscapes" I worked with reflected turbulence as well as optimism. I walked in the woods every day and took note of the seasonal changes and leaves as well as nettles.

Words entered into the work as a kind of journal. I searched for the most poignant phrases. Writing as image has roots in hieroglyphics, calligraphy, shape poems, Cubism, Dada, etc. Another painter who used them is the closest to my heart, Charlotte Salomon.

After graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania I became a mother/homemaker in New Jersey while also working part-time as a college professor and practicing and exhibiting artist. [See work from 1999-2002]

I also felt the need to respond to world events, particularly after September 11th as well as the Bush Administration, war in Iraq, the rhetoric of the Right and its manipulation of religion for political gain and denial of the climate crisis. Feminist politics soon followed. I took the approach of misogyny as represented by Picasso, particularly his use of the image of the bull for masculine virility. I had a strong desire to turn these images on their heads, to have a visual response, empowered by the same language. I continued exploring feminism by making paintings that rebel against the place of women as determined by the story of Adam and Eve. Mixed in with these themes is my interest in the subconscious, particularly the myths and archetypes as studied by Joseph Campbell.

A spiritual journey is present throughout my work and it takes a particular religious form in paintings with subjects from Christianity.

The stylistic changes are not arbitrary but necessary in order to address all I wish to express.

A need to move to more positive imagery brought me to paint butterflies, the Christian symbol of resurrection as well as a secular symbol of renewal.[See 2006]

All of these years of painting are punctuated by significant personal losses, one in 2007 brought about the minimalist paintings. Narrative is left behind as events left me without words. During and immediately following this period the prints of The Butterfly Book were made. Butterfly Hand v.1 is a kind of self-portrait, a crucifixion as the butterfly's dark body seems to also be a gouge in my hand (like the nail holes in Jesus'). As I said, the butterfly is renewal and the image is the embodiment of the continual theme of beauty, pain, and time in my work.

In 2008 minimalist pieces and butterflies are interrupted by Winter Landscape I as I connect with my environment where I live, in the country outside Rochester, NY. Done from memory, it combines landscape and Minimalism. More landscapes followed taking me into the fall. The numerous colors and scale of the leaves inspired dot paintings. I began painting the leaves as dots, spots of color like a sample of the palette I saw but also points in space and graphic elements referencing pixels. During this time I painted over some old paintings (example Twelve Years Later), starting again or continuing, making lemonade from lemons as the saying goes.

An excerpt from my 2007 artist's statement can elaborate:

"Form and color are combined with expressionist paint handling. Expressionism comes from a need for truth and the acknowledgement that growth comes from change and sometimes trauma. If glossing things over is a lie (think of magazines and advertising), then Expressionism is the antithesis. Some of my images are minimalist, focusing more on large areas of color and light rather than on marks. Paint handling and surface are still important to these works, but are subdued.

I am interested in getting closer to the mysterious, closer to the things we think and do not say, to pre-verbal thoughts. I am after what is intrinsic to the human condition, what can be sensed but is difficult to grasp. I am seeking the temporal and the eternal. I want my paintings to function like poetry and prayer, without the words; to be objects for spiritual reflection and experience. Their substance should be what they are; they are not pictures of something else. They are objects embodying spiritual experience, icons."

Nicole Maynard: Images of Optimism, is an exhibition of paintings and prints on view at the Bowery Gallery in Chelsea October 28 – November 22, 2008.

An Expressionist painter, Maynard says of her work, "Optimism is present, but there is an underlying toughness, backbone that keeps these images from being overly romantic, offering credibility to redemption. They are objects embodying sensual and spiritual experience, icons of renewal."

The public is invited to a reception to be held November 1^st, 4 – 6 p.m.

Nicole Maynard: Artist's Statement

"A summary of my artistic practice:

I look out and in to paint the space in between."

I make paintings, prints, and drawings. Imagery varies but is mainly the landscape of Western New York where I live. These landscapes often reflect architecture, especially windows (the edges of the picture are bracketed by what could be a window frame, curtains, or trees or all three simultaneously). It relates to the traditional idea of paintings being like windows and the image being outside the room. These are domestic views, but are also influenced by driving through the landscape. Then the countryside flanks the road and the edges of the windshield are in my peripheral vision. In addition, this structure connotes a theatre stage, the curtains pulling back to instantly reveal fresh, new scenery, the world seen anew. The space in the center of the picture, often a rectangle, sometimes appears to recede as well as advance in space. Multiple functions can push metaphor. This rectangle is the space we can move through or bask in; it comes forward to beckon, radiant. It can be expansive or smaller, a tighter squeeze. Central, it is the heart of tranquility.

While these pictures are painted broadly, with large areas of color, I also do paintings composed of dots or filled circles. They are Pointillist, but the dots are much larger than the traditional form. They relate to contemporary media in resemblance to pixels. Singular units making up a whole, they are each a moment in time. They are like days making up a lifetime and are a meditation on the present. Playful rhythms keep the work from being dry and redundant. I work intuitively, enjoying the process yet also reflecting on the history of painting.

I am interested in getting closer to the mystery in non-verbal experiences. I am after what is intrinsic to the human condition; what can be sensed but is difficult to grasp. I am seeking the temporal and the eternal. I want my paintings to function like poetry and prayer, without words; to be objects for spiritual reflection and sensual experience. The essence of something is conveyed through their substance, through their materiality, through the paint (there is nothing like paint, but paint can be like so much). Optimism is present, but there is an underlying toughness, backbone that keeps these images from being overly romantic, offering credibility to redemption, harmony, and connection. This intense presence is the unifying factor in everything I do. At their best, I hope them to be ineffable and sublime. They are evidence of ritual, icons of renewal made of color.

The Stations of the Cross Video

This is a three minute video of the series of fourteen paintings of The Stations of the Cross painted between 2001 and 2002. All paintings are oil on panel, 16x20 or 20x16 for verticals. I am seeking permanent installation in a church sanctuary for the group and am not breaking the series apart. Any information regarding interested churches would be appreciated. Just as paintings of the past depicting Christian images can be appreciated as art and with content addressing the human condition, it is my hope that viewers regardless of religion will take time to see the work.
